Where you can actually renew, and why the websites disagree

Nigeria has two missions in Germany that handle passports:

• Embassy of Nigeria, Berlin, Neue Jakobstrasse 4, 10179 Berlin
• Consulate General of Nigeria, Frankfurt am Main, Weissfrauenstrasse 12, 60311 Frankfurt

Both capture biometrics. You choose your processing mission inside the online application, so pick the one you can physically reach on a weekday morning, because you will be going there in person.

Now the part that costs people real money. There are two websites that both look official, and they do not say the same thing.

I checked both on 8 September 2026. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs page at berlin.foreignaffairs.gov.ng still carries instructions copied from a United States consulate. It literally tells you to “select UNITED STATES as processing country and Atlanta, GA as Office of Application” and quotes adult fees of USD 106 and USD 137. Those figures are years out of date and that routing is wrong for anyone living in Germany. Do not follow that page.

The page the Berlin mission actually maintains is nigeriaembassygermany.org, and its passport guidance was last revised on 12 March 2026. That is the one that matches what happens at the counter. When two government pages disagree, use the one with the recent revision date and the euro administrative charge on it, and confirm by email before you travel across the country.

Step by step: how to renew your Nigerian passport in Germany

1. Start online at the diaspora portal

Go to passportintl.immigration.gov.ng, the Nigeria Immigration Service portal for applicants outside Nigeria. Sign in with Google and choose “Apply for Renewal/Re-issue”, not “Apply for Fresh Passport”. Picking the wrong one means paying again, and the portal does not refund.

One naming trap worth knowing: if your passport is five years old or older, or the pages are full, what you need is technically a re-issue. If it is younger than that, it is a renewal. The portal handles both under the same menu item, so do not overthink it, but the words will come up at the counter.

2. Pay online, by card

Pay inside the portal with a debit or credit card. Bank transfer is not accepted for the passport fee itself. The charge lands in US dollars and your bank converts it, so the euro amount on your statement depends on your card issuer’s rate that day. Budget a little above the headline figure for the conversion spread.

3. Book your biometric appointment and print everything

Book the appointment through the portal and print three things: the completed application form, the payment receipt, and the appointment slip. The Berlin mission is explicit that it does not provide internet or printing for applicants, and it turns away people who arrive without printed documents. Print them at home. Print two copies.

4. Turn up in person with the right file

For a renewal or re-issue you bring:

• Completed passport application form
• Proof of online payment
• Appointment slip
• Your original expiring or expired passport
• A copy of your passport data page
• Two passport photographs
• Completed guarantor form
• An EC card to pay the EUR 30 administrative charge

That EC card line is not a detail. Cash is prohibited at the mission, in any form, on or off the premises. If you show up with sixty euros in notes and no card, you do not get served. 5. Wait, then collect

Processing is six to eight weeks from biometric capture. The booklet is produced and then returned to your chosen mission. You collect it, or use the delivery option where it is offered.

A useful comparison for anyone weighing whether to renew here or wait for a trip home: since 1 September 2025, applications processed inside Nigeria cost NGN 100,000 for the 32-page book and NGN 200,000 for the 64-page book. The diaspora dollar rates have not moved. Whether Nigeria is cheaper depends entirely on the exchange rate on the day, and it almost never beats the cost of a flight, so renewing in Germany is the sensible route for anyone actually living here.

Take the 10-year book. USD 230 against USD 150 is an extra 80 dollars for double the pages and double the validity, and it takes one renewal cycle out of your life entirely. Given that every renewal drags an Ausländerbehörde appointment behind it, the 64-page passport is the cheapest thing on this page.

The contactless option, and who it is really for

The Nigeria Immigration Service now runs a contactless renewal system that lets eligible applicants abroad capture fingerprints and a facial image remotely using a compatible smartphone and the NIS mobile app. It launched in Canada in November 2024, extended to the UK, United States and Italy that same month, and opened to the rest of the world on 1 December. More than fifteen thousand passports have been issued through it.

Two honest caveats before you get excited.

First, not everyone passes the eligibility check. Applicants who are declared ineligible after verification have to go back to the portal and book a physical appointment at a mission anyway. Plan for the embassy trip and treat contactless as an upside.

Second, contactless does not mean paperless. Applicants who complete the remote biometric step must still send supporting documents to the processing mission. You are saving the queue, not the file.

Try the contactless route first. If verification clears you, you have saved a day and a train fare. If it does not, book Berlin or Frankfurt and move on without arguing with the app.

The step almost everyone forgets: transferring your residence permit

This is the part that turns a finished passport into a finished job, and it is the reason people end up stuck at borders.

Germany issues the electronic residence permit, the eAT, as a separate plastic card rather than a sticker in your passport. That is good news: a new passport does not cancel your permit. But your eAT carries your old passport number, and the two documents have to be reconciled. So once you collect the new booklet, book an appointment at your Ausländerbehörde for the Übertragung des Aufenthaltstitels, the transfer of the residence permit to the new passport.

Bring three things: the new passport, the old passport, and your current eAT card. The office records the new passport number against your permit.

Two things worth knowing while you wait for that appointment:

• You can still travel. Carry the old passport, the new passport and your eAT card together and you can re-enter Germany. Do not throw the old booklet away, no matter how cancelled it looks. It is the link between your permit and your identity until the transfer is done.
• Settlement permit holders have it easier. When a settlement permit is newly issued, the passport serial number is no longer printed on the eAT, and the card is generally valid for ten years from issue, no longer tied to your national passport’s validity.

A worked example: Blessing in Frankfurt

Blessing is a master’s student in Frankfurt. Her passport expires 14 June 2027. Her residence permit expires 30 September 2026 and she wants a two-year extension.

If she goes to her permit appointment first, the office looks at a passport with nine months left and issues a permit valid to roughly June 2027 instead of September 2028. She loses fifteen months.

What she does instead, starting in the first week of September 2026:

• Week 1: applies online, pays USD 230 for the 64-page book, books biometrics at the Frankfurt consulate on Weissfrauenstrasse, twenty minutes from her flat.
• Week 3: attends the appointment, pays EUR 30 by EC card, submits the file.
• Weeks 9 to 11: collects the new passport, now valid to 2036.
• Week 12: books the Ausländerbehörde, brings both passports and her eAT, and applies for the extension against a passport with ten years on it.

Total cash: about EUR 250 equivalent. Total time: roughly three months, most of it waiting rather than working. The permit she walks out with runs its full term.

Common mistakes I keep seeing

• Following the foreignaffairs.gov.ng page. It routes you through Atlanta and quotes 2010s fees. Use the mission’s own site.
• Paying someone for an appointment. Appointments are free. The Frankfurt consulate has stated publicly that it has no annex and no contracted agents acting for it. If a middleman is charging you for a slot, you are being taken.
• Arriving with cash. EC card only for the EUR 30. This turns people away at the door.
• Arriving with nothing printed. The mission does not print for you.
• Choosing “Fresh Passport” instead of “Renewal/Re-issue”. Non-refundable.
• Not bringing the old passport. If you cannot produce it, it is treated as lost, and lost-passport cases need approval from Immigration headquarters in Abuja. That adds weeks, a police report and a written application to the Comptroller General.
• Booking the permit appointment before the passport lands. Passport first, always.
• Renewing at six months instead of twelve. The maths simply does not work.
