When I applied to Hochschule Fulda, I had to upload a nigerian university transcript for uni-assist together with the transcripts from two German universities I had already attended. That was the third time I had sent my Nigerian degree documents to a German university, and the third time the process looked completely different. This guide explains what uni-assist actually wants from your Nigerian transcript, how to get it from your registry, and how to avoid the mistakes that cost applicants weeks.
Everything about uni-assist rules and fees below was checked on uni-assist.de on 29 September 2026. Where I could not verify something from an official source, I say so instead of guessing.
Quick answer
- Not every German university uses uni-assist. Check the target university’s own application page first.
- For Nigerian university studies, uni-assist asks for the official transcript of records, stamped by the university and signed by the registrar, plus the grading system.
- Fee: EUR 75 for the first course and EUR 30 for each additional course, per semester (checked 29 September 2026).
- Nigerian documents are in English, so no translation is needed unless a document is in another language.
Do you even need uni-assist? My three applications
I went through three different systems, and this is the part most guides skip.

At SRH Hotel Academy in Dresden, a private university, I sent my credentials and my first bachelor’s transcript from Nigeria directly to the university for evaluation. No uni-assist. At the Deggendorf university of technology, the university also did not use uni-assist. It used its own assessment method through a system called Primuss. It was only when I moved to Hochschule Fulda that I used uni-assist.
The lesson is simple. Before you pay anyone, open the “how to apply” page of the exact university and course. If it says applications go through uni-assist, use it. If it points you to its own portal, follow that. Paying uni-assist for a university that does not use it is wasted money. If you are still choosing a route, read our guide to the uni-assist application for Nigerians, then come back here for the transcript detail.
What uni-assist wants from your Nigerian university transcript
Here is what the uni-assist Nigeria page and its document pages say, checked 29 September 2026.
| Document | What uni-assist says |
|---|---|
| Transcript of records | Official transcript, with the university stamp, signed by the registrar |
| Grading system | Must include the highest possible mark and the lowest pass mark for a bachelor’s degree. Often printed on the back of the transcript or in the student handbook or course guide |
| If grading is not on the transcript | Upload a link or PDF of the official grading system, for example the examination regulations. A link to Wikipedia or anabin is not enough |
| WAEC or NECO | A copy of the certificate plus the scratch card number and PIN so results can be verified |
| Translation | Not needed for German or English documents. Otherwise a sworn translator, not an ordinary agency |
Uni-assist also says documents must be official, meaning a signature and stamp from the issuing institution, or a verification code, or a reference to automatic issuance. It also says to upload every certificate in its entirety, so do not leave out pages. You only upload each document once, even if you apply to several universities.

How to get your Nigerian university transcript for uni-assist
Registries differ, so treat this as a working method, not a guarantee. I could not verify official fee or turnaround figures from any Nigerian university’s own page, so I will not quote numbers I cannot stand behind. Your registry will tell you its own fee and timeline.
- Collect your details first. Full name as used at the university, matriculation number, department, year of admission and year of graduation. Missing details is a common reason a request stalls.
- Ask the right office for the right document. You want the official transcript of records, not a printout of results from your department. Say clearly that it is for a German university and that it must be stamped and signed by the registrar.
- Ask about the grading key at the same time. Request the grading scale with the highest mark and the lowest pass mark, or find it in the examination regulations, so you do not have to chase it later.
- Check for name differences. If your name on the transcript is different from your passport or degree certificate, fix or document this now. A mismatch can pause an evaluation.
- Get a written date. Ask when it will be ready. Turnaround varies widely by university and time of year, so start two to three months before your deadline.
- Scan it properly. When you receive it, scan every page, including the back if the grading system is printed there.
Uni-assist’s own pages, as of 29 September 2026, do not say that your Nigerian university must send the transcript directly. Other bodies and some universities do require that, so read the checklist that appears in your My assist account and the instructions of your target university before you decide how to send it.
If you already studied in Germany, upload everything
For Hochschule Fulda, I gathered every transcript I had from my previous universities in Germany, added the transcript from the Nigerian university, and uploaded all of them to the uni-assist portal for evaluation. Your case may differ, but a full academic record is easier for an evaluator to assess than a partial one. If you are changing university while already in Germany, also speak to your local immigration office about what it means for your residence permit. Uni-assist fees, with a worked example
Checked 29 September 2026: EUR 75 for your first chosen course and EUR 30 for each additional course, per semester. The fee is due whatever the evaluation result, and it is the same for a standard application or a preliminary review documentation (VPD). Some universities pay the fee for their applicants, and My assist shows a note if yours does.
Uni-assist’s own example: two courses at University 1 and one at University 2 costs 75 + 30 + 30 = EUR 135. A new semester starts the calculation again. When I applied, I paid EUR 75 for my first university. The extra-course price has changed since, so use the current figure above, not what you heard from someone who applied earlier.
Timing: when things go wrong
If a document is missing, you can upload it before the application deadline. Uni-assist says to plan 4 to 6 weeks for processing, and after the deadline every required document must already be uploaded, otherwise the application cannot be forwarded and you may have to apply for a later semester. That is why your transcript request should start early. If you still need a foundation year, read about Studienkolleg for Nigerian students, and for school-level documents see WAEC legalization for the German embassy.
Common mistakes with a Nigerian transcript
- Uploading a departmental result printout instead of the official transcript with stamp and registrar signature.
- Leaving out the back page where the grading system is printed.
- Forgetting the WAEC scratch card number and PIN.
- Paying uni-assist for a university that runs its own portal, like the Primuss route I used at Deggendorf.
- Waiting until the deadline month to ask the registry.
- Uploading a non-English or non-German document with no sworn translation.
Your checklist before you upload
- Confirm the university really uses uni-assist for your course.
- Official transcript, stamped and signed by the registrar, scanned in full.
- Grading system with highest mark and lowest pass mark.
- WAEC or NECO certificate and scratch card details.
- Transcripts from any German universities you attended.
- Sworn translation for anything not in English or German.
- Your motivation letter and CV where the course asks for them.
- Payment method ready for the EUR 75 first-course fee.
For the official rules, read uni-assist on educational certificates, its handling fees page and the Nigeria country page. DAAD also explains admission at daad.de.

Frequently asked questions
Do I always need uni-assist to apply to a German university?
No. Only member universities use uni-assist. Some universities run their own assessment, and some private universities assess your documents themselves. Check the “how to apply” page of each university before you pay anything.
Does uni-assist accept a Nigerian transcript that has no registrar signature?
Its Nigeria page says the transcript of records must carry the university stamp and be signed by the registrar. A transcript without those marks is a risk. Ask your registry to fix it before you upload.
Do I need to translate my Nigerian transcript?
Uni-assist says certificates issued in German or English need no translation unless the country page lists an exception. The Nigeria page lists none, checked 29 September 2026. If a document is in another language, you need a sworn translation.
How much does uni-assist cost in 2026?
The handling fee is EUR 75 for your first chosen course and EUR 30 for each additional course, per semester, checked 29 September 2026. It is due whatever the evaluation result is.
Can I upload missing documents after I submit?
Yes, before the application deadline. Uni-assist says to plan 4 to 6 weeks for processing, and after the deadline all required documents must already be uploaded.
I studied in Germany before. Do I upload those transcripts too?
That is what I did for Hochschule Fulda. I uploaded the transcripts from my earlier German universities together with my Nigerian transcript. Check your own target university’s list, because requirements differ by course.
How long does a Nigerian registry take to issue a transcript?
It varies by university and by time of year, and I could not verify a reliable figure from an official Nigerian university page. Ask your registry for a written date and start at least two to three months before your deadline.
