uni-assist needs time to check, translate where necessary, and forward your documents. Their own guidance asks for several weeks before the university cut off. Submitting on 14 July for a 15 July deadline does not work, because the university receives nothing until uni-assist finishes processing.

The costs also add up. uni-assist charges EUR 75 for your first application in a semester and EUR 30 for each additional one. If you apply to five programmes, that is EUR 75 plus four times EUR 30, so EUR 195 in total for that semester.

Arriving in March or April. Temperatures are climbing, days are getting longer, and the adjustment is gentle. You get roughly six months of good weather before your first German winter, by which point you have friends, a routine and warm clothes. Housing is slightly easier because the big student rush happens in September. The downside is that student job openings are quieter, and orientation events are smaller.

Arriving in September or October. You join the main cohort, orientation is full scale, and it is much easier to make friends because everyone else is also new. Student job hiring peaks. Studienkolleg: usually a winter decision

If your WAEC and Nigerian qualifications do not give you direct entry, you will need a Studienkolleg foundation year first. Public Studienkollegs follow the same 15 July and 15 January pattern, but seats are limited and the summer round is smaller.

Add the entrance exam, the Aufnahmeprüfung, into your planning. You must sit it, usually in Germany, which means you need a visa before you have a university place. Tunde, twenty four, graduated from a Nigerian polytechnic with a HND in mechanical engineering and finished his NYSC in April 2026. He wanted a masters in Germany and started researching in June 2026.
