I have not studied medicine, so I will not pretend this is my own story. What I can tell you is how to study medicine in Germany from Nigeria based on the official pages I checked on 30 September 2026, and I have marked every gap I could not verify. I also went through three different German application systems myself, at SRH Dresden, Deggendorf and Hochschule Fulda, and that taught me something that matters even more for medicine: never guess which portal a university uses.
The short version is that a WAEC certificate alone does not get you straight into a German medical faculty. The route is German language, then Studienkolleg, then a direct or uni-assist application, and every faculty runs its own rules.
Quick answer: how to study medicine in Germany from Nigeria
- uni-assist says a WAEC or NECO certificate that meets its requirements qualifies you for Studienkolleg, not for direct admission (checked 30 September 2026).
- Studienkolleg and its final exam, the Feststellungsprüfung, usually run in German, even for English-taught degrees.
- Medicine applications for non-EU applicants generally go to each university directly, and some use uni-assist.
- Budget for language learning, a Studienkolleg year, and possibly tuition. A private M-Kurs I checked costs EUR 6,490 in year-one fees.
Step 1: Check what your Nigerian certificate qualifies you for
The uni-assist Nigeria page says it assesses your WASSC under ZAB guidelines. If you meet the requirements, the certificate qualifies you for Studienkolleg. It asks for a copy of your WAEC or NECO certificate plus the scratch card number and PIN. If you have already attended a Nigerian university, that changes the picture, because you would be assessed on your transcript and grading system instead. Our guide on the Nigerian university transcript for uni-assist covers that document set. The official page is here: uni-assist Nigeria page.

Step 2: Learn German before anything else
Medicine is taught in German. I could not verify any English-taught human medicine programme that leads to a German medical licence, so do not plan around one. MHH Hannover says it offers no preparatory German courses or language tests, and requires certificates at its own level categories.
Here is what I could verify about levels, all checked 30 September 2026:
| Stage | Level and source |
|---|---|
| Entering Studienkolleg | MHH says at least B2-level certificates (its category C+). One private Düsseldorf M-Kurs names B1 as its minimum, so providers differ |
| University admission, general framework | The KMK framework accepts DSH-2 or higher, or TestDaF with TDN 4 in all parts, and the German part of the Studienkolleg exam. telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule is listed as an exempting certificate |
| Faculty level | Universities can set a different level. Freiburg gives only 5 points for the minimum certificate and up to 15 for stronger ones |
For a wider view of levels, read our guide to the German language level for university.

Step 3: Do the Studienkolleg, using the medical course
For medicine you need the M-Kurs, or a comparable course. MHH says the M-course is required after Studienkolleg for its medicine degree, and that you re-apply through uni-assist once you pass the Feststellungsprüfung. uni-assist describes Studienkolleg as a one-year course. The two providers I checked:
| Provider | What the page says |
|---|---|
| Studienkolleg Düsseldorf (private) | 2 semesters. Written exams in biology, German and physics, oral chemistry. Registration EUR 495, tuition EUR 5,995 per year |
| WBS Studienkolleg (private) | Two terms. Needs B2 German. Fee EUR 6,960. Its own page lists conflicting exam subjects, so confirm with them |
These are private providers, so their prices are not what every Studienkolleg charges. Read more in our Studienkolleg guide for Nigerian students.
Step 4: Apply to the medical faculty, and pick the right portal
Hochschulstart says that medicine normally runs through its central system, but that non-EU applicants who are not treated as German applicants must apply directly to the universities. It also says universities may run one annual cycle with 15 January as the only deadline for foreign applicants, so ask each one. Three examples:
- MHH Hannover: non-EU applicants with a foreign certificate apply through uni-assist. The degree window is 1 April to 31 May, winter term only. For the Studienkolleg route, MHH lists windows of 1 April to 15 July for winter and 1 December to 15 January for summer. It requires the TestAS Mathematics, Informatics and Natural Sciences module, taken in German. Your final grade is 50 per cent from your foreign certificate and 50 per cent from the Studienkolleg.
- Freiburg: uses a points system. Its information sheet for 2025/26 gives up to 40 points for the school certificate, up to 15 for language, up to 14 for TestAS, 5 for an M-Kurs, 1 to 2 for a hospital internship, and up to 6 for the motivation letter and CV. That sheet is last year’s and says “without guarantee”, so check the current rules.
- Heidelberg: says non-EU applicants are selected in a separate quota and apply directly through its international portal. I read this second-hand, so confirm on the faculty page.
I could not verify the size of the non-EU quota at any faculty. Treat any percentage you see elsewhere as unconfirmed until a faculty states it.
What it costs: a worked example
Here is an example using the verified figures above, all checked September 2026. It is an illustration, not a quote.
- Private M-Kurs, year one: EUR 495 registration plus EUR 5,995 tuition = EUR 6,490.
- uni-assist fee for one course: EUR 75, per semester.
- If your faculty is in Baden-Württemberg: EUR 1,500 per semester according to the ministry page, which is EUR 3,000 per year if unchanged.
So a first year of Studienkolleg plus one uni-assist application is EUR 6,565 before living costs, blocked account or German courses. For the proof of funds, see our blocked account guide. The ministry page is here: Baden-Württemberg tuition for international students. I could not confirm it is unchanged for 2026.
If you already have an MBBS
That is a different route, called Approbation. Commercial sources describe a language exam and a knowledge test, with B2 German for the language exam and C1 for the licence. Exam fees are quoted at EUR 390 to EUR 1,100 depending on the state. These are commercial sources, so confirm with the authority in the state where you want to work.
Common mistakes
- Assuming an English-taught medicine degree exists and skipping German.
- Paying uni-assist for a faculty that takes applications directly.
- Missing the one annual deadline, which can be 15 January at some universities.
- Choosing a private Studienkolleg without comparing fees and recognition.
- Using last year’s points table or deadlines.
- Forgetting the WAEC scratch card details, or your uni-assist documents, when a step asks for them.
Your checklist
- Check your certificate on the uni-assist Nigeria page.
- Start German and book a recognised exam.
- List three faculties and read each one’s international application page.
- Compare Studienkolleg providers and confirm they offer the M-Kurs.
- Plan for TestAS where required.
- Budget fees, blocked account and living costs, then read our cost of studying in Germany from Nigeria guide.
- Use the German student visa guide for Nigerians for the visa step.

Frequently asked questions
Can I study medicine in Germany with only WAEC?
Not directly. uni-assist says a WAEC or NECO certificate that meets the requirements qualifies you for Studienkolleg, the one-year preparatory course, and the Feststellungsprüfung is usually taken in German. Checked 30 September 2026.
Do I apply through hochschulstart.de?
Usually not. Hochschulstart says non-EU applicants who are not treated as German applicants must apply directly to the universities. Some universities route this through uni-assist, for example MHH Hannover. Check each faculty.
Is there an English-taught medicine degree that leads to German Approbation?
I could not verify one from an official source. Every route I checked runs in German, so plan for German first.
What German level do I need?
It depends on the stage. MHH says Studienkolleg entry needs at least B2-level certificates. For university admission, the KMK framework accepts DSH-2 or higher, or TestDaF with TDN 4 in all parts, but each faculty can set its own level.
Is tuition free for Nigerians?
Not everywhere. Baden-Württemberg charges non-EU students EUR 1,500 per semester according to its ministry page, which I could not confirm as unchanged for 2026. Private Studienkolleg courses also charge fees, for example EUR 5,995 per year plus EUR 495 registration at one Düsseldorf provider, checked September 2026.
Is TestAS compulsory?
MHH requires TestAS with the Mathematics, Informatics and Natural Sciences module, taken in German. Freiburg awards points for TestAS. Other faculties differ.
I already have an MBBS. Is this the same route?
No. Doctors trained abroad follow the Approbation route, usually a language exam and a knowledge test. Commercial sources quote B2 German for the language exam and C1 for Approbation. Confirm with the state authority.
